The Genetic Interest Group is Changing.Who we areGenetic Interest Group is a well-established national charity working with patient groups, charities, individuals and families affected by genetic conditions. Genetic Interest Group has over 130 member organisations, representing rare genetic conditions such as Alstrom syndrome as well as more complex genetic conditions such as cancer and heart disease. It is estimated that 6 out of 10 people in the UK are likely to develop a disease that is at least partially genetically determined by the age of 60. Approximately 1 in 30 children are born with some kind of genetic condition. Why change our name?Founded in 1989, the Genetic Interest Group has been working to support all those affected by genetic conditions for over two decades. In recent years we have grown significantly to become involved in an increasingly diverse range of activities. In 2009, we asked a representative poll of those important to us, including members and potential members, whether our name accurately reflected our mission. Although many of our stakeholders felt that Genetic Interest Group was an extremely well-respected organisation, our work was not always well understood.. We feel that our new name and branding provides a better insight into the voices we represent and the wide range of work we do. Diverse workGenetic Interest Group carries out a wide variety of work, representing all genetic conditions, both rare and common. We work on policy campaigns with MPs, policymakers and the NHS to ensure that legislation supports the needs of families. We also take part in a wide range of research projects tackling issues important to our members, such as the lack of good quality information available to patients, improving access to insurance, and developing networks of experts to improve services for patients. What will we become? We are delighted to announce that on 1st June the Genetic Interest Group became Genetic Alliance UK. We launched our new brand at this annual conference this year.
We look forward to continuing to work together under this new name to improve the lives of all those affected by genetic conditions, raising awareness of the issues people face to ensure that high quality services and information are available to all who need them. Thank youWe would like to thank all those at Tudor Reilly the corporate communications agency who have taken a lead on our re-branding, the designers at Mint Salad who created our new logo and Bird and Bird who have helped with the legalities of our re-brand. All these companies have provided their support and time on a completely pro bono basis and we are extremely grateful for this.
