About us

Genetic Alliance UK is the national charity working to improve the lives of patients and families affected by all types of genetic conditions. We are an alliance of over 200 patient organisations. Our aim is to ensure that high quality services, information and support are provided to all who need them. We actively support research and innovation across the field of genetic medicine.

What this internship offers

This internship offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to learn skills and gain demonstrable experience in event management. The intern will also have the opportunity to contribute ideas on how we can improve and enhance our events, helping us to develop and deliver them into effective initiatives.

What the internship will involve

The SWAN UK Information Events Intern will have the opportunity to work with members of the SWAN UK (syndromes without a name) team to arrange, develop and deliver our schedule of information events about undiagnosed genetic conditions. SWAN UK is the only dedicated support network available for families of children and young adults with undiagnosed genetic conditions in the UK. It is run by the charity Genetic Alliance UK.

Our SWAN UK information events are run in partnership with clinical genetic centres and often with support from the relevant genomic medicine centre (GMC) and/or the Academic Health Science Network (AHSN). We already have a number of events confirmed for the new year in Southampton, South West London and Cardiff and are in the process of arranging dates for an event in Oxford and one with Great Ormond Street Hospital.

We are looking for an intern who can help with all aspects of promoting and delivering the confirmed events, and also making contact with other relevant partners to arrange further activities. The post-holder will also attend the events (travel and accommodation will be provided).

What we like our interns to have:

  • A degree or equivalent experience.
  • A can-do attitude.
  • Good research, communication skills and IT literacy.
  • An organised approach to work with attention to detail.
  • An enthusiasm for working as part of a team as well as using their own initiative.
  • Commitment to the aims and objectives of Genetic Alliance UK.
