Genetics and Insurance: Accurate Information to Access Insurance, is a project being undertaken by Genetic Alliance UK which aims to produce accurate and impartial information that is easily accessible for people with and at risk of long-term genetic conditions who wish to access insurance. Approximately 4 million people in the UK are affected by a genetic condition; therefore accessing appropriate insurance can be a significant problem for many of those who are affected.

Individuals and healthcare professionals find it difficult to access appropriate or affordable insurance cover and show concern in asking for advice from insurance companies in case of inadvertently disclosing information that may disadvantage them when their insurance application is assessed.

Genetic Alliance UK regularly receives enquiries from people with genetic conditions who are wary of seeking information from the insurance industry. Concerns are often raised by individuals who are uncertain about their rights and obligations in relation to disclosing certain details of genetic risk or family history.

The aim of this project is to develop clear and easily accessible information for those who have difficulty accessing insurance. The information will contain accurate answers to questions which are often posed by those with genetic conditions. It will also seek to remove uncertainty and give clarity on the law by dispelling misunderstandings and confusions around the concordat and moratorium on genetics and insurance. This will provide those affected by genetic conditions greater confidence in approaching the industry with a view to accessing insurance cover.

Genetic Alliance UK will consult with our members and insurance industry experts in order to produce the comprehensive and well-informed information. The information will then be widely distributed amongst Genetic Alliance UK’s member groups, associated groups and health care professionals as well as in the insurance industry.

The project will run from January 2012 to May 2012.
