Rhian Morgan
Development Officer - Wales

Genetic Alliance UK aims to improve the lives of people affected by genetic conditions by ensuring that high quality services and information are made available to all who need them.
Devolution in the United Kingdom means that healthcare services and policies for Wales are the responsibility of the Welsh Government. Genetic Alliance UK is very active in Wales with a dedicated post. As Genetic Alliance UK's Development Officer for Wales I am working closely with Buddug Cope to generate and communicate a patient/family viewpoint on policy and practice relating to the development of genetics in healthcare in Wales.
My main responsibilities are:
- To promote awareness of the needs of families living with genetic conditions for services and support which are appropriate, user friendly and which reflect current scientific undertaking and best clinical practice.
- To bring together representatives of charities, support groups and other voluntary bodies to inform the debate about scientific and healthcare developments from the perspective of those living with genetic conditions in Wales.
- To work with local stakeholders in Wales to represent Welsh interests when working with our sister organisation Rare Disease UK, to campaign for a strategy for rare diseases in the UK.
- To inform political and professional discussions in Wales about the information, support and resources needed to provide high quality healthcare services for those with genetic conditions. To help improve equity and access to services for people living in Wales who are affected by genetic conditions.
- To represent the issues relevant to Wales when liaising with Genetic Alliance UK head office, ensuring coherence and continuity of policy and practice as far as possible.
Genetic Alliance UK in Wales has three key areas of work which are policy and health service development, education and public engagement and contributing to research and independent projects related to genetics. Implicit to this work is the involvement of individuals and families affected with genetic conditions in these key areas and ensuring that they are informed of any relevant developments.
